The modern home has enjoyed a number of conveniences and comforts many people appreciate. But these may not necessarily be safe. There are a number of common household products that are considered unsafe and may be harmful to your health. Here are just some of them.

Air Fresheners

Air fresheners help the home to always smell fresh by trying to overpower the nasty smells and odors. Health wise, using air fresheners may not be good. These products can interfere with the body’s ability to smell by either using a compound that can make the nerves numb or coat the nasal passages with a film of oil. Air fresheners also contain ingredients like formaldehyde and phenols, the former a known carcinogen and the latter able to cause allergic reactions when coming into contact with the skin.

Laundry Products

Laundry soaps and detergents all help to clean and deodorize your clothes. But while doing so, they may be doing more harm than good to your health. Most laundry detergents contain formaldehyde, which can cause allergic reactions as well as asthma. Even scented dryer sheets may also be hazardous. Research shows that dryer sheets found on dryer vents can emit harmful air pollutants called volatile organic compounds or VOC’s. A safer alternative is to spray clothes with natural lavender scent or rose water in order to keep clothes smelling fresh.

 Furniture Polish

What can make the home furnishings look shiny may not be as good to your health. Furniture polish can make your furniture look like new but they can also be hazardous. These products contain hydrocarbons, which can be highly poisonous. They can irritate the skin and eyes and may cause vomiting, low blood pressure, and nausea when inhaled or ingested.
